Abstract

The BRICS grouping has emerged as an important platform for cooperation among major economies of the Global South, reflecting changing patterns in the global economic and political order. BRICS’ evolving role in promoting economic cooperation, trade, investment, development finance, and greater representation for developing countries in global institutions. The expansion of BRICS, the opportunities and challenges it creates for emerging economies, and its implications for South-South cooperation. The discussion will also consider the New Development Bank, local-currency initiatives, and the prospects for a more inclusive and multipolar international economic system.

Short Bios

Amb. Ausaf Sayeed

Dr Ausaf Sayeed (b. September 18, 1963) is a former Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of External Affairs and former Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia and Yemen and its High Commissioner to Seychelles.A member of the 1989 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Dr Sayeed has significantly contributed to India’s diplomatic, geopolitical, economic, cultural, and consular engagements worldwide during his 34-year-long illustrious career. He dedicated 18 years of his career to the Middle East, including 10 years in various roles in Saudi Arabia.As Secretary (CPV & OIA), he was also responsible for all matters relating to Consular, Passport, Visa, Extradition, Overseas Emigration and Indian Diaspora. He also handled India’s political and economic relations with all the Gulf (GCC) and West Asia & North Africa (WANA) countries.

Dr Sayeed is widely recognised as a strategic thinker who focuses on fostering business development between India and the Middle East. His efforts were instrumental in transforming India’s relations with Saudi Arabia and other West Asian countries, promoting trade, investments, and joint ventures while fostering closer security and defence ties. Dr Sayeed is a native of Hyderabad and holds a Master of Science and a PhD in Geology from Osmania University and an Advanced Diploma in Arabic from the American University in Cairo. He is a Competent Toastmaster and recipient of the Shri Y.G.K. Murthy Gold Medal from Osmania University. He also received the prestigious Yoga Mithra Award from S-Vyasa University, Bengaluru, for his efforts in promoting Yoga in Saudi Arabia.

He is a prolific columnist and author and has published four books, two of which are on India’s Art and Culture.

Dr. Surjit Bhalla

Dr. S.S. Bhalla, is a Senior India Analyst for the Observatory Group, a New York based macroeconomic policy advisory firm and Chairman of Oxus Research & Investments. In 2017, he was appointed as Member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council. He has been a member of the Secondary Markets Advisory Committee of SEBI and the National Statistical Commission of India. Dr Bhalla writes extensively on economic issues and has recently authored another book titled, The New Wealth of Nations.

Prof Rakesh Mohan Joshi

Prof. Rakesh Mohan Joshi is Former Vice Chancellor at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), the premier B-School under Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. Prof. Joshi, a senior professor and former Dean at IIFT was on deputation to Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bengaluru, as Director. Prof. Joshi, a gold medallist from IIFT, received his education and training from Harvard Business School, Boston; IIFT, Rajasthan University and National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal. He authored highly popular books from Oxford University Press and had been the Editor of the prestigious quarterly journal of IIFT, Foreign Trade Review (FTR). Prof. Joshi has extensive trans-national exposure and has been associated with several multilateral organizations, such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, UNCTAD, International Dairy Federation, Asian Productivity Organisation (APO) etc. Prof. Joshi had been the Chairman of the ‘UGC Committee for Framing the Regulations for Foreign Educational Institutes’ and Chairman of the Expert Group for “Development of Educational Framework for Global Citizenship in Higher Education Institutions” 2021. Presently, he is also the Chairman of the Business Services Sectional Committee, Bureau of Indian Standards, Government of India. He is also on the Council of Management, All India Management Association (AIMA) Prof. Joshi has a strong inclination to research Internationalization of Indian Culture and has carried out a major research Project on “Implications of Bhagwat Geeta in Contemporary Management” by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).

Dr. Waiel S H Awwad

Dr. Awwad has twice served as President of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia (FCC), where he is now President Emeritus. He was a board governor at the British School for a decade and is a founding member of the International Association of Press Clubs (IAPC), headquartered in Warsaw, Poland. Currently, he is the Distinguished Advisor (West Asia) at the Tillotoma Foundation and serves as a Distinguished Adviser for the Global Counter Terrorism Council (GCTC). Dr. Waiel S.H. Awwad is a Senior Foreign Journalist based in South Asia with a distinguished career since 1979.

He is also a Fellow at the International Strategic Institute in Rome and the Secretary General of the Indo-Arab Intellectual Forum (TAIF). Dr. Awwad has received numerous international awards and is fluent in Arabic, English, Hindi, and Persian.

He served as the South Asia Bureau Chief for Alarabiya TV in Dubai Media City and MBC in London, and was the host of "Dateline South Asia," the first Arabic program of its kind in partnership with Asian News International (ANI). Additionally, he has been a radio correspondent and analyst for stations in Kuwait, Oman, and Damascus.
