Abstract

Karnataka is a dynamic and resilient economy with a projected Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of ₹28 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2024-25. The growth is driven by the thriving information technology sector, a robust manufacturing industry, and an evolving agriculture sector. The state also benefits from strategic advantages such as its natural resources and strong educational institutions, which support its economic resilience and innovation. The panel will critically examine the state’s economic performance, key growth sectors, current challenges, and future opportunities that will shape its economic trajectory.

About the Speakers

Raghuvir Badrinath

Raghu comes with 15 years of experience in business journalism having worked in Senior Editorial roles with globally renowned India and United States-based Media Houses – Business Standard, The Times of India, NewsCorp and Reorg. He specializes in analysis of economic cycles, its impact on the corporate world, and in the highly opaque and exotic canvas of Alternative Investment Management. He has a Fellowship in Data Journalism, from DataLEADS, under the umbrella of Google News Initiative.

Raghu has led Bureaux across Asia-Pacific focussing on the complex nuances of distressed debt, corporate restructurings, bulge-bracketed private equity funds, leveraged buy-outs and Mergers & Acquisitions. Raghu is currently working to bring about sustainable livelihood improvements through financial inclusion solutions for marginalised tribal societies in hostile geographies.

R.S. Deshpande

R S Deshpande is a Former Director of Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. He was formerly National Fellow, Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). He was the initiator of the proposal and founding Director of Bengaluru Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics.

He steered the mega study on “Farmer at the Millennium” and he was the architect of Karnataka’s Agricultural Policy 2006 and Chaired many Policy Bodies in the Agricultural Sector. He participated in the deliberations at the Planning Commission from the 9th Plan onwards. He was on the Research Advisory Committee of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Central Silk Board and also a member of the selection panel under CACP.

He has authored 22 books, and more than 125 research papers published in national- international journals and completed 49 research studies.

He is a recipient of many awards and gold medals especially PNASF Gold Medal for Agricultural Policy, Life Time Achievement Award from Aurangabad University, Sir M Visveswaraya award in excellence in Education. Further, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.

He was trustee of Indian Institute of Education, Pune, and President of the Foundation for Research in Health Systems, Bangalore.

M.H. Bala Subrahmanya

Dr. M. H Bala Subrahmanya is currently a Senior Professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His teaching specialization lies in Managerial Economics, Macroeconomics, Industrial Economics. He was a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Fellow at University of California, Davis, USA, from 2009-2010. He has also served as a visiting research fellow at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, Tokyo, Japan from 2005-2006; and Foundation for Small & Medium Enterprise (SMEs) Development, University of Durham, Durham, United Kingdom in 2000. He has acted as the principal coordinator for several research projects in the field of social sciences & supported research in areas of R&D- technology Business Incubators in India, internationalization of SMEs, technological innovations on the growth of manufacturing SMEs; among others. His research has been highly appreciated and published across Economic & Policy journals & magazines.

Kedar Vishnu

Dr. Kedar Vishnu trained as an Institutional economist and currently serves as an Associate Professor of Economics at DLHS, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Bengaluru. Dr. Kedar earned his PhD from the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) in Bengaluru and his M.A. in Economics from Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune. His PhD was funded by the ADRTC (Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, Govt. of India). His research interests encompass Applied Econometrics, Macroeconomics, Agricultural Economics, and Institutional Economics. With over thirteen years of experience in teaching and research, Dr. Kedar has previously worked with the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai, and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics University (BASE), Bengaluru. At CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune, he headed the Economics programs and played a key role in launching the M.Sc. Economics and B.Sc. Economics programs. Dr. Kedar has contributed to various research projects funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, and NIAP, New Delhi. He has presented his research in the USA, Canada, Russia, Germany, Slovakia, China, and Indonesia. He is a member of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, USA, and has authored over 27 articles in newspapers such as Deccan Herald, Telangana Today, and Sakal on various emerging topics. He is a Winner of the Travel Grants for Early Career Professionals from the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, Washington, USA, International Association of Agricultural Economists, USA, and Higher School of Economics, Russia for presenting his Research work. He has received the prestigious Ronald Coase Fellowship from Ronald Coase Institute, USA for doing his empirical work on Institutional Economics.
