Abstract
Tamil Nadu, located on the south-eastern coast of India, is a significant contributor to the Indian economy and has witnessed spectacular economic growth for decades. It is the second largest economy in India and contributes 8.8% to the national GDP.In the financial year of 2023, the gross domestic product of the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India amounted to about 23 trillion Indian rupees. This was an increase from about seven trillion Indian rupees in the fiscal year 2012. It has a diversified manufacturing and servicing sector and is a leader in several sectors such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals textiles, leather products, chemicals, engineering products and IT &ITES. Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is known as the SaaS capital of India.
Tamil Nadu has become the economic powerhouse and an ideal investment destination due to its strategic location, conducive business environment, state-of-the-art infrastructure, proactive governance and industrial ecosystem. It has also been one of the most successful states in attracting FDI due to solid macro economic fundamentals, strong industrial base and abundant skilled manpower. There are several renowned international schools and universities by which more than 10 lakh graduates join the workforce annually. It is home to 12 of the top 50 cities in ease of living index ranking and is also ranked 1 in good governance index.
About the Speakers
N.R. Bhanumurthy
Prof N. R. Bhanumurthy is currently the Director of Madras School of Economics, Chennai. Earlier he served as first Vice-Chancellor of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics University, Bengaluru (BASE University). He also had long stints as Professor at NIPFP, New Delhi and as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi.
His research areas are macro-monetary economics, fiscal policy, international money & finance, macroeconomic modelling and development economics. In these areas he has authored over 90 research papers, five books, and over 250 short articles in newspapers and magazines. His views on Indian economy is very regularly quoted in both print and visual media. He was a Visiting Fellow at MSH, Paris, Mcgill University, Montreal and ADB, Manila. He has been a consultant to UN-DESA (New York), UN-ESCWA (Beirut), UNDP-Nepal, UNDP-Bhutan, UNESCAP, ILO, the World Bank, and ADB.
He has served on over 25 government committees constituted by Finance Ministry, Ministry of Statistics, Ministry of Rural Development, National Statistical Commission, Ministry of Education, erstwhile Planning Commission, NITI Aayog, RBI, SEBI, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Government of Karnataka, among others. Dr Bhanumurthy is currently serving as a member of the CAFRAL Board (a Subsidiary of Reserve Bank of India). He is also serving as Managing Trustee of the Indian Econometric Society Trust and Managing Trustee of Indian Economic Association Trust for Research and Development since 2010. He was Secretary of the Indian Econometric Society for over 17 years between 2006 and 2023. As part of the India’s G20 presidency, Dr Bhanumurthy is nominated as a Chair for the T20 Taskforce-1 on ‘Macroeconomics, Trade and Livelihoods’
Suresh Babu M
Suresh Babu M has been appointed as the director of the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS). Mr. Babu was a faculty member in the Department of Humanities of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He has also held positions at the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram; Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune; and Institute for Social and Economic and Change, Bengaluru; and has been a visiting faculty in various institutions in India and abroad, according to an MIDS release. His areas of research interest are Applied Macroeconomics, Industrial Economics and Trade and Development. He was consultant for the Asian Development Bank for identifying “Growth Potentials in Kerala’s Industrial Sector” in 2000 and the ‘Local Consultant’ for the World Bank for the preparation of the Country Economic Memorandum in 1996. He is a Member in the WTO Forum on non-agricultural sector, Government of Kerala in 2003. He holds a PhD from the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
S. Rajendran
S. Rajendran is Senior Professor & Head, Department of Economics, Gandhigram Rural Institute. He has 34 years’ in research and 24 years in Teaching experience. S Rajendran Specialization in Development Studies. he has authored over 39 papers in Edited Volume/ Proceedings,142 No. of publications in International and National Journal, 4 Policy Notes four books and Four Books. S. Rajendran is Director i/c, PRIDE, Periyar University, Syndicate Member of the Periyar University, Chairman, Board of Examinations, University of Mysore and Chairman & Member Coordinator of NAAC, Bangalore. He holds a PhD, M.Phil and M.A.
Prasant Kumar Panda
Prasant Kumar Panda is a Professor in the Department of Economics at Pondicherry University. Previously, he was Professor and Head of Economics and Professor In-charge (Academics) at Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN). His research focuses on Public Economics, Fiscal Policy, Decentralization, State Fiscal Management, Applied Statistics, Econometrics, and Health Economics. Panda has taught at various institutions, including Government Puducherry colleges, Orissa University of Agricultural and Technology, and Biju Patnaik University of Technology.
He has extensive administrative experience, having founded and coordinated the Departments of Economics, Education, and History at CUTN. Panda served two terms as Head of Economics and has been a Professor In-Charge (Academics) and academic coordinator. He has published 47 research papers and edited/co-edited four books. He is the editor of Vision: Journal of Indian Taxation and has presented at 47 conferences and delivered talks at 55 events. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Pondicherry University.
