Abstract

Punjab since it's inception has witnessed significant growth in GDP and other sectors like health, education. The region has a strong educational infrastructure with institutions like Panjab University and Punjabi University, contributing to high literacy rates and skilled professionals in various fields. Education, particularly in rural areas, has been pivotal in reducing poverty and improving quality of life. The services sector, including information technology, healthcare, and finance, has expanded rapidly, becoming a crucial part of Punjab's economy. This shift from agriculture to services has helped diversify the economy, creating employment opportunities and boosting income levels. However, religious conversions, have seen a rise in the state, driven by social and economic factors. The panel shall deliberate on the interrelation of education, the services sector, and religious dynamics, which continues to shape its socio-economic landscape.

About the Speakers

Birinder Pal Singh

Birinder Pal Singh is Professor of Eminence, Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, Punjabi University, Patiala, India. He was a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (1993–1995). His research areas cover tribal, peasant and other communities and the sociology of violence. He has published the books Economy and Society in the Himalayas: Social Formation in Pangi Valley (1996); Problem of Violence: Themes in Literature (1999); Violence as Political Discourse: Sikh Militancy Confronts the Indian State (2002); ‘Criminal’ Tribes of Punjab: A Social-Anthropological Inquiry (edited, 2010); and Punjab Peasantry in Turmoil (edited, 2010). He has also published several research papers including in Sikh Formations, Economic and Political Weekly, Gandhi Marg and Journal of Punjab Studies. He has a doctorate from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an MPhil from the School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Satvinderpal Kaur

Satvinderpal Kaur is currently a Professor and Chairperson in the Department of Education, Panjab University. Additionally, she serves as the Coordinator of the Centre for Academic Leadership and Educational Management, Panjab University. Prior to her current roles, she was the Chairperson and Associate Professor in the Department of Education, Central University of Punjab.

Her research interests are broad and encompass educational policy, contemporary issues, pedagogic studies, and the sociology of education. She has successfully completed several research projects and published widely in reputed national and international journals. She is a member of the editorial board and reviewers' panels of esteemed national and international publication houses such as Sage, Routledge, and Springer and various academic bodies and advisory boards. She is a life member of various reputed societies viz the Parachi Society of Psycho-Cultural Dimensions, the Indian Association of Teacher Educators, and the All India Association of Educational Research.

Prakarsh Singh

Prakarsh Singh is the Chair Professor of Economics at Plaksha University. Prior to Amazon, he was a professor at Amherst College in Massachusetts, the leading liberal arts college in the US with visiting positions at Swarthmore College, University of Pennsylvania and University of Navarra. He was a science leader and senior economist at Amazon with work spanning subscription modelling, global talent management and streaming businesses to develop strategic insights in competition, pricing and marketing.

He brings 12+ years of work experience in academia and industry with invited presentations at 80+ leading global academic and policy institutions. He has hands-on experience building models employing econometrics, machine learning and data science.

He was a recognized Bar Raiser within Amazon with an experience of leading 150+ tech hiring loops and has led research projects and teams in Prime Science, Global Talent Management and Prime Video. His research work on Incentives for Child caregivers to reduce Malnutrition has been awarded AAEA's Quality of Research Discovery and Best Paper Awards. He was the main organizer of the inaugural Liberal Arts Colleges Development Economics Conference (LAC-DEV) in 2013 and Co-organizer, 2014-2017. He has 21 publications in peer-reviewed economics journals with 400+ citations.

He completed his PhD, Master of Research and Bachelor of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Anilesh S. Mahajan

Anilesh Mahajan is a deputy editor at India Today, where he covers a variety of political and economic issues. His articles often delve into the intricacies of Indian politics, governance, and economic policies along with picking up socio-economic trends in the society. He has written chapters in various books describing several long term trends and also explained the crucial events in the past. Mahajan frequently writes about electoral strategies, policy impacts, sociological churns and key political developments within India. His work provides in-depth analysis and insights into current events.
