Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a pivotal role in the economic development of Punjab, India. The panel shall discuss the dynamic landscape of MSMEs in Punjab, focusing on their contributions to employment, income generation, and regional development.

About the Speakers

Jatinder Singh Bedi

Prof. Jatinder S. Bedi is Director – Research and Training (Ph. D Program) at IDC. He has undertaken research work in areas such as manufacturing sector performance in small, medium and large scale sector, growth of various agro-based industries and their forward and backward linkages, sector specific work, human development studies and Housing requirements in various cities of India.

He was member of Expert Group set up by Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, 2008 to review and suggest best method of declaration of retail sale price on pre-packed commodities chaired by Dr Govinda Rao. He was also a member of the Support Group and Chairman of Sub-group formulated by the Ministry of Food Processing Industry for the Inter Ministry Task Group on Mid Term Appraisal for the Tenth Plan, Planning Commission, 2004.

Swati Mehta

Swati Mehta (PhD) is an Assistant Professor at Punjab School of Economics, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. She was a Visiting Researcher at Seoul National University, South Korea from March to August 2019. Swati convenes four sessions at the United Nations General Assembly's Science Summit in 2022 and 2023. Her research focuses on Economics of Innovation, Innovation Systems Approach, Global Value Chains, Development Economics, and Manufacturing Industries.

She authored two books published by Routledge India: ‘Innovation Systems, Economic Development and Public Policy’ and ‘Challenges to Punjab Economy: A Regional Perspective from India’. Swati has published in journals like Asian Journal of Technology Innovation, Seoul Journal of Economics, and International Journal of Technology Management and Sustainable Development. She referees for Economic Modeling, Millennial Asia, Innovation and Development, and other respected journals.

Harvinder S Nagi

Harvinder Singh Nagi is the Managing Director at Universal Hydraulics Inds, which manufactures machine tools. He is a postgraduate in Economics who transitioned from a short period of service to join the family business. With over 30 years of experience in manufacturing machine tools, he is a stalwart in the MSME sector. Harvinder is actively involved in industrial advocacy as a member of Laghu Udyog Bharati and several local industry associations across India.

Prince Bansal

Prince is the President of the Ludhiana Cycle & Parts Manufacturers Association (LCPMA), dedicated to advancing the bicycle industry's interests. Under his leadership, LCPMA offers members benefits including product promotion, supplier connections, enhanced digital presence via WhatsApp and Facebook groups, support for payment and advance recovery, discounted offers, and awareness of MSME policies. Additionally, Prince Bansal is the proprietor of Prince International, manufacturers, and importers of complete bicycles and bicycle parts. With 28 years of experience in the MSME sector, he brings extensive industry expertise.
