Abstract

Economic performance of states deal with the real and nominal growth rates of states over time. The panel shall focused exclusively on the relative performance of states, measured using two indicators Share in India’s GDP and Relative per capita income from 1960-61 to 2023 24, providing insights into how individual states have performed in response to changes in national and state-specific policies.

About the Speakers

Sanjeev Sanyal

Sanjeev Sanyal is currently a member of the Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister, and Secretary to Government of India. He was the Principal Economic Adviser to the Finance Minister for five years till February 2022. He has also represented India on many international forums such as OECD and G7, and was the Co-Chair of the G20’s Framework Working Group. He was one of the main architects of the G20’s Global Action Plan that was used to coordinate the international response to the Covid19 pandemic. Prior to joining the government, he spent over two decades in financial markets and was Global Strategist and Managing Director at Deutsche Bank.

An alumni of Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, Mr. Sanyal later attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He has had many affiliations including being a Visiting Scholar at Oxford University; an Adjunct Fellow at Institute of Policy Studies, Singapore; a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London; Visiting Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi; Senior Fellow of the World Wildlife Fund. He was awarded the Eisenhower Fellowship in 2007 for his work on urban dynamics. In 2010 he was named as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Leader.

Mr. Sanyal is the author of a number of best-selling books including Land of the Seven Rivers, The Ocean of Churn, India in the Age of Ideas, and the Indian Renaissance. He co-authored and edited six Economic Surveys of the Government of India between 2017 and 2022. He has also published over two hundred articles and columns in leading national and international publications.

Upinder Sawhney

Upinder Sawhney is an Expert at EGROW Foundation. She is a distinguished economist and a former professor at Panjab University, Chandigarh. She served as Chair of the Department of Economics from 2007-2010 and 2016-2019, and has extensively published on Indian economic public policy in both national and international journals. She led various international and domestic projects, including the Government of India's Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC) with Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, and University of Wurzburg, Germany, titled "Macroeconomic Effects of Ageing in India – Lessons from European Union," and a World Bank-sponsored Budgetary Analysis at the State Level, 2004-05. She contributed to various committees, such as the Fourteenth Finance Commission and the Regional Direct Taxes Advisory Committee.

Saikat Sinha Roy

Saikat Sinha Roy is Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, where he previously served as Coordinator of the UGC Centre for Advanced Studies and Joint Director of the School of International Relations and Strategic Studies. He holds an M. Phil. and Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University, focusing on Open Economy Macroeconomics, Trade and Development, and Emerging Market Economies. Before joining Jadavpur University, he was an Associate Professor at the Research and Information System for Developing Countries and worked briefly with the Asian Development Bank. Dr. Sinha Roy was a British Academy Visiting Fellow at Lancaster University in 2009 and received the Siksharatna award from the Government of West Bengal in 2022. He is involved with various technical committees, including the Exim Bank of India and the Indian Statistical Institute. He recently completed a policy research project on state-level exports in India and is part of a global research initiative on Special Economic Zones. His publications include contributions to national and international journals, and he co-edited the book *International Trade and International Finance: Explorations of Contemporary Issues*, published by Springer.
