Abstract
Science, technology, and innovation (STI) are key drivers of economic growth, fostering productivity, competitiveness, and the creation of new industries. Through advancements in research and development, STI enhances manufacturing, resource efficiency, and sustainability, addressing global challenges like climate change and healthcare. Innovation stimulates entrepreneurship and strengthens global market position. Investment in STI infrastructure promotes knowledge transfer, collaboration, and commercialization, facilitating long-term prosperity. Countries that prioritize STI policies create environments conducive to growth, ensuring resilience, competitiveness, and sustainable development. The webinar shall discuss how harnessing STI is crucial for maintaining economic growth and advancing global economic leadership.
About the Speakers
TCA Anant
Dr TCA Anant is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Public Policy and Governance, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Hyderabad, off-campus. Dr Anant superannuated as a member of the Union Public Service Commission in 2023. Before this, he was a Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at the Delhi School of Economics (DSE), University of Delhi. He has also served as the Chief Statistician of India (CSI) and Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation from 2010 to 2018, and as Member Secretary, Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) from 2006 to 2009. As Member Secretary, ICSSR, Prof. Anant was instrumental in getting undertaken the fourth review of ICSSR. He also steered the research efforts of ICSSR in doing the first baseline survey of Minority Concentration Districts. Prof Anant has served on Expert Committees of various Ministries and Agencies of the Government of India, the Reserve Bank of India, the Competition Commission of India, Councils and Boards of several Universities as well as international organizations.
Prof. Anant received his PhD in Economics from Cornell University and his MA in Economics from DSE. He was Assistant Professor in Economics at Michigan State University, USA, and Reader and then Professor in DSE, where he started the course on Law and Economics in the MA program. His research has covered a wide range of areas, including Labor Economics, Industrial Economics, Law and Economics and Econometrics.
Sabyasachi Saha
Dr. Sabyasachi Saha is Associate Professor at the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), New Delhi since 2021. He has been Assistant Professor at RIS (2014-2020) and full-time Consultant at RIS during 2013-14. He specialises in innovation economics, trade and technology, international trade, technology and development policy.
He has co-edited two volumes published by Springer and has made extensive academic contributions in the form of research articles and policy briefs.
He has regularly participated in official policy forums at the UN Headquarters and other UN led platforms and has been an active contributor on partnerships, regional cooperation and technology facilitation for SDGs. He has also been contributing to G20, BRICS and South-Asia Think-Tank forums and networks. Recently, he has also contributed as Member of the Thematic Group on Sustainable Technologies for Govt. of India’s forthcoming Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2020.
He obtained his PhD in Economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi in 2013 and completed his M.Phil (2009) and M.A. in Economics (2007) from JNU. He is a recipient of the WIPO Prize for Young Scholars, DAAD funded fellowship of the Government of Germany and Government of India Travel Award. As PhD scholar he has participated in numerous academic conferences globally including at the National University of Singapore, Georgia Tech, University of Warsaw, and HTW University of Applied Sciences, Berlin. Before joining RIS, he worked as senior research staff at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).
He is the current Editor of the South Asia Economic Journal published by Sage. At RIS he coordinates two annual Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) capacity building courses of the Government of India attended by officials, scholars and diplomats from partner developing countries. He has also played important roles in organization of high-level policy dialogues and conferences in India and abroad.
Swati Mehta
Swati Mehta (PhD) is an Assistant Professor at Punjab School of Economics, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. She was a Visiting Researcher at Seoul National University, South Korea from March to August 2019. Swati convenes four sessions at the United Nations General Assembly's Science Summit in 2022 and 2023. Her research focuses on Economics of Innovation, Innovation Systems Approach, Global Value Chains, Development Economics, and Manufacturing Industries.
She authored two books published by Routledge India: ‘Innovation Systems, Economic Development and Public Policy’ and ‘Challenges to Punjab Economy: A Regional Perspective from India’. Swati has published in journals like Asian Journal of Technology Innovation, Seoul Journal of Economics, and International Journal of Technology Management and Sustainable Development. She referees for Economic Modeling, Millennial Asia, Innovation and Development, and other respected journals.
