Abstract

In 2022-23, 65 percent of India’s population lives in the rural areas and 47 percent of the population is dependent on agriculture for livelihood. Contrary to the common perception about predominance of agriculture in the rural economy, about two thirds of rural income is now generated in non-agricultural activities.The agriculture sector has grown at an average annual growth rate of 4.6 percent in the past six years. The panel shall discuss the rural economy of India and lay down the roadmap for its improvement.

About the Speakers

S. Mahendra Dev

Prof. S. Mahendra Dev has been the Director and Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) in Mumbai since 2010. Previously, he served as Chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (2008-2010) and was an independent director at Kotak Mahindra Bank from 2013 to 2021. He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and has held various roles in national committees, including the National Statistical Commission and the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Employment.

He has published around 200 research articles and 19 books, including “Inclusive Growth in India” and “Perspectives on Equitable Development.” His expertise covers agriculture, rural economy, and development economics. He received his Ph.D. from the Delhi School of Economics and conducted post-doctoral research at Yale University.

He has consulted for organizations like UNDP and the World Bank and has received several awards for his contributions to education and public service, including an honorary doctorate from Acharya Nagarjuna University. He is currently a member of the Audit Committee and Special Committee of the Board of Directors for Monitoring Large Value Frauds at Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Sitikantha Pattanaik

Sitikantha Pattanaik is Chief Economist, NABARD and Former Executive Director, RBI. Prior to being promoted as ED, Dr. Pattanaik was an Adviser in the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR). Dr. Pattanaik has, over a span of three decades, worked in the areas of economic research and monetary policy in RBI’s Monetary Policy Department and Department of Economic and Policy Research. He was with the Central Bank of Oman on deputation from RBI for about five years. As Executive Director, Dr. Pattanaik will look after the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR).
